Geologic heritage

Our region is situated in the hinge of major geological events which shaped its landscapes. Many types of grounds are represented making of Ardèche the richest French department in botanical species. The west Ardèche Cévennes grounds are crystalline, formed sometimes by  granitic”serres” sometimes by slaty massifs conferring the specificity of local houses, in particular their roofs covered with lauzes. The volcanic massif of Coiron, the most southern of the Chain of Velay offers magnificent basalt columns as well as the biggest volcanic neck of Europe. The bed of Ardèche dug profound gorges in the limestone also shaping a unique curiosity: Le Pont de l’Arc.
